The Center for Island Sustainability (CIS) is an information resource for a variety of environmental issues.  Established early on in 2009, CIS has been working hard to develop an islands-based model for sustainability. The Center for Island Sustainability (CIS) is one of the University of Guam's newest departments, which was initiated by President Robert Underwood. The department was put in place to tackle various issues in regards to Island Sustainability. The Center will become the focal Institute at the University of Guam for adapting and modeling sustainable technologies that meet the needs of island communities in the broader areas of the environment, economy, society, and education.

Mission Statement

The Center for Island Sustainability will create an Islands-based model of renewable, sustainable & appropriate technologies focusing on indigenous energy alternatives & replicable research to meet the needs of island communities in the broader areas of Environment, Economy, Society, and Education.

House #32- A Sustainable Model

CIS adopted House #32 in the Dean's Circle of UOG to house the center as well as use this building as a demonstration model for a sustainable building. House #32, along with the other 35 former homes in the Dean's Circle, were built in the 1960's and were not designed to be energy efficient for today's standards. In 2011, CIS retrofitted House #32 to become a much more energy efficient building. Visit us today for a tour of House #32 and learn how we only pay about $14 every month for power.

UOG Green Student Organization

UOG Green is the initiative to develop a sustainable campus environment that can serve as a model for our island and the region. Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This concept is the driving force of the UOG Green initiative as we develop program components focusing on recycling, education and outreach, and alternative/renewable energy.

Note: Data for this listing was compiled from online sources by UOG social work students enrolled in SW110 Introduction to Community Services on Guam classes (Sections 1 and 2) in the spring semester of 2017.
